Thousands set to benefit as Active Thames opens new funding round

  • Active Thames opens its latest funding round, supporting projects that encourage more people to get active on, in and around the tidal Thames and inland waterways through London, Essex, and Kent. 
  • Since 2021, the fund has awarded more than £770,000 to 73 organisations, benefiting close to 12,000 people across the region. 
  • In 2025 alone, funded projects helped over 3,500 people take part in close to 1,500 activity sessions, while over 120 individuals gained coaching skills and qualifications. 

The Port of London Authority, has today launched the latest round of its popular Active Thames Fund, helping organisations deliver  projects that get more people active on the tidal Thames and inland waterways through London, Essex, and Kent.  

Almost 12,000 people have benefited from Active Thames since 2021, as community groups, sports clubs and charities across the region are invited to apply for the latest round of funding. 

The Active Thames Fund supports ambitious projects that use waterways to improve health and wellbeing, develop skills, and help more people enjoy the benefits of being active on and around the water. Blue space can often be overlooked – this funding will help open up access to water and enable clubs to deliver impactful projects in their local communities. 

Now in its sixth year, the fund has awarded more than £770,000 to 73 organisations since 2021, supporting projects that connect people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities with their local blue space. .  

This year's funding round will prioritise projects that engage under-represented communities and develop the skills of coaches, volunteers and support staff. Applications close on 27 September.
