We’re pleased to welcome Alan, Martin, Benjamin and Andrew to the Port of London Authority (PLA) as they begin their training as marine pilots.
They each arrive with significant seagoing experience, a strong focus on safety, and a clear enthusiasm for ship handling and navigation. Operating on the tidal Thames presents a unique and demanding challenge, and we look forward to seeing them develop and succeed in this environment.
Alan Stroud
Alan is originally from Dover, UK. He began his maritime career across cargo, cruise and Ro-Pax sectors, progressing to Master on large passenger vessels at a relatively young age. Since moving into pilotage in 2020, he has gained an unrestricted licence as a Medway pilot and experience across a wide range of vessels, while also contributing to training and professional development discussions.
He joined the PLA to challenge himself in the complex and dynamic Thames environment and is particularly interested in its structured approach to training. He is looking forward to building local knowledge, working with a new pilot group and contributing to future training.
Outside work, he enjoys running, swimming and spending time outdoors, and is involved with the UKMPA.
Martin Jeffries
Martin is from the Ribble Valley in Lancashire. He started his career on container vessels before moving into UK coastal roles, including ERRVs and dredgers, eventually becoming Master on a port maintenance dredger and gaining several UK PECs.
Motivated by his enjoyment of ship handling in confined waters, he was drawn to pilotage on the Thames. He is excited to develop his skills further and work with a wider variety of vessels.
Outside of work, he enjoys photography and chess.
Benjamin Stewart
Ben is from Teignmouth, Devon. He began his career with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary before moving into commercial shipping, gaining experience across dredgers, ferries, offshore vessels and superyachts. He has held roles up to Chief Officer, most recently with CalMac Ferries.
His motivation to become a PLA Pilot stems from his experience in high-traffic environments and desire to further develop his ship handling skills. He is excited to take on a new challenge and learn from experienced professionals.
Outside of work, he enjoys family time, walking his dog and volunteering as a Special Constable.
Andrew Hobley
Andy is from Lincolnshire and has a 27-year seagoing career, progressing from cadet to Master. He has worked across a diverse range of vessels, including tankers, container ships, anchor handlers and dredgers.
His interest in becoming a PLA Pilot developed while working on the Thames, where he was inspired by pilots’ enthusiasm for the role. He is looking forward to working with a diverse group of people, taking on new challenges and long-term career development at the PLA.
Outside of work, he enjoys cycling, hiking, swimming, live music and is keen to live closer to London.
